Highlighting Women in Construction: Stories from the Field and Office

As we recognize Women in Construction Week, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for all the incredible women on our team—both in the field and in the office. Their hard work, dedication, and expertise keep our projects moving and help shape the success of our company every day. This week, we’re shining a spotlight on just a few of the outstanding women who make an impact at PDC Incorporated and in our industry.

Building a Foundation for the Future: Our Intern’s Perspective

Currently in her second semester at Springfield Technical Community College, our intern Julia is majoring in Building Construction Management and Engineering. Her journey into construction began with a high school architecture class that sparked her interest in the field. Initially interning with an electrical company, she soon realized her passion lay elsewhere and transitioned to our team late last summer.

Through her internship, Julia has gained hands-on experience with submittals, purchase orders, and construction software. She’s also learning the intricacies of specialty contracts and material procurement. Reflecting on her time here, she says, “This experience has completely changed my perspective on construction. I now see how many different aspects come into play beyond just designing and building.” Looking ahead, Julia hopes to earn her Master of Architecture degree and become a licensed architect, carrying with her the invaluable lessons she’s learned on the project management side of construction.

From Apprentice to Journeyman: A Carpenter’s Journey

Kylie, one of our carpenters, started her path in construction through the Sisters in the Brotherhood pre-apprenticeship program. With just one final class left before officially earning her journeyman title, she reflects on her growth in the trade and the challenges she has faced along the way.

“One of the biggest challenges for me has been taking full responsibility for my work. If something goes wrong, I have to find a solution—it’s on me to make it right. I’ve learned to ask questions, observe experienced journeymen, and always stay open to learning new things.”  Kylie thrives in the dynamic environment of the field, where no two days are the same, and appreciates the camaraderie she has built with her crew.

Being a woman in a male-dominated field comes with its unique experiences. She shares, “But most days, I don’t even think about it—I’m just another person on the job site. My advice to women considering this career? Go for it! It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Beyond the job site, she takes pride in the recognition she’s received for her hard work and dedication. Kylie is also actively involved in outreach through the union, helping to promote diversity and inclusion in the trade.

A New Path in Project Management: An Assistant Project Manager’s Perspective

Before stepping into her current role, our Assistant Project Manager Lindsay gained hands-on experience running her own painting business, which gave her valuable insight into construction and working with different trades. Wanting to take on a bigger role in coordinating projects, transitioning to assistant project management was a natural next step.

“My day involves working closely with the project managers, preparing submittals, gathering quotes, and coordinating tasks. I enjoy the fast-paced environment and the support of the PDC team.”  Lindsay values the mentorship she’s received, noting that working alongside experienced professionals has reinforced the importance of attention to detail and strong communication.

Looking at the future of women in construction leadership, she sees encouraging progress. “It’s exciting to see more women in leadership roles in construction. My advice is to stay curious, build relationships, and embrace opportunities.” While Lindsay is still new to her role, she’s proud of the transition she’s made and looks forward to growing and contributing to more successful projects with the team.
